(Photograph) - Mearns primary, East Renfrewshire’s new pound;6 million flagship school, had its roof torn off during Monday’s gales - exactly a week before it was due to be declared open by Jack McConnell, the First Minister.

The school was built under a public-private partnership, but the council says there is no evidence of substandard work. It is on an exposed site and the gales were exceptional.

Structural engineers have declared the building safe and the 740 pupils return on Monday - but not to an official opening.
