Root amp; Branch, the pioneering music magazine, has brought out a second CD compilation, Everybody Swing. It recreates in loving and scholarly detail the almost forgotten era of popular and folk music from 1947 to 1963, which featured people such as Lonnie Donegan (right). Apart from the 23 tracks on the CD, including examples of skiffle, blues, square dances and calypso, there is a highly informative booklet with essays and archive photogaphs. These put the music into a social and cultural context, as the world of post-war austerity slowly evolved into the sixties. This isn’t just nostalgia; it’s the richness of history.
