COMPETING TO make the most dramatic entrance at the school prom is a custom for teens worldwide. So it is hard not to pity two Bulgarian police officers who have been sacked for taking the craze too far.

Ivan Ivanov, one of the officers, had taken pity on his neighbour, a boy with no father and a disabled mother. He decided to make the boy’s prom entrance particularly memorable by arranging for two of his officers to carry out a fake arrest on the boy, before delivering him to the dance in a patrol car.

Unfortunately, another pupil filmed the fake arrest and posted footage of it on the internet.

This led to the dismissal of both Mr Ivanov and his chief inspector. Both will not now receive a pension. Their two colleagues, who took the boy to the ball, have been disciplined but not sacked.
