* A college for blind students that regards itself as “a pit stop en route to independence” was also praised by inspectors this week.
Leadership and management at the Royal National College for the Blind, in Hereford, is rated outstanding, as is its social inclusion and support for its 192 students.
Inspectors said: “The quality of teaching is significantly above that found within the further education sector. A common feature that permeates the curriculum is that students’ overall programmes are tailored individually to meet their specific needs.”
Sport and leisure at the college, home to the British Blind Football Squad, was rated outstanding.
Roisin Burge, principal, said: “Our main target was to avoid re-inspection as specialist colleges do not tend to do particularly well in inspections.
It is wonderful to do better than that.”
