The Scottish Rugby Union is planning a drive to increase the number of secondary pupils playing the game. It will be a key part of the new post of head of player development, which will be taken up by Henry Edwards, the current Scotland under-18 coach, on May 1.

“We need to have as broad a base as possible in order to nurture the talent that emerges from a competitive environment,” explains the SRU chief executive, Gordon McKie.
