Much coverage has been given to power couple Yvette Cooper (housing minister) and husband Ed Balls (new MP and ex-chief adviser to the Chancellor). But there could so nearly have been another New Labour power couple: Education Secretary Ruth Kelly and communities minister David Miliband.
It seems they were very close, briefly, post-Oxford. A press conference they gave together in the recent election campaign hinted at what might have been. “They were just like Richard and Judy,” says our informant.
“David Miliband was all off-the-cuff and rambling but Ruth Kelly stuck to her script.”. Which may explain why Ms Kelly has so far done better than her ex in the political race to the top.
