New guidelines have been published for carrying out detailed background checks when recruiting school staff.
Safeguarding children and safer recruitment in education explains what checks need to be completed, including those for volunteers and schools governors who come into regular contact with children.
It also sets out what schools will be responsible for from January 2007, including keeping a central file of checks that have been completed.
