On satellite images, Antarctica looks a little like a laughing elephant, with the wide semi-circle of East Antarctica forming the ear, the indent of the Ross Sea the mouth, with West Antarctica and the winding Antarctic Peninsula the trunk. You can clearly make out the 3,200km snaking ridge of the Transantarctic Mountains, the highest peak of Vinson Massif, and Mount Erebus, Antarctica’s most active volcano.
