Save libraries

It was great to read "School libraries: an endangered species?" (September 18). It drew attention to the widespread panic felt by those who fear that school libraries, which have been under attack of late, will be even more vulnerable in the current economic climate.

As Barack Obama said: "At the moment that we persuade a child, any child, to cross that threshold into the library, we change their lives forever, for the better."

Unison is promoting an Early Day Motion (1939) in Parliament, which states that libraries are at the heart of learning and calls for school libraries to be put on a statutory footing. Readers are urged to encourage their MPs to sign it.
