SCHOOL meals have been ruled out as a possible cause of the deaths from the human form of mad cow disease around a small village in Leicestershire.
The announcement by Leicestershire Health Authority follows a suggestion by the Government’s CJD surveillance unit this week that the high death toll among young people could be due to processed foods like burgers, sausages and pies found in school meals.
But scientists, wh are investigating the deaths of three people from variant Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease who all had links to the village of Queniborough, rejected the possibility they got the disease from school canteens. Instead, they are investigating abattoirs.
Chris Davis, headteacher at Queniborough primary, the school at the heart of the village, said: “There are a lot of false stories flying around so we welcome this news.”
