If students at a school in Bristol needed any added inspiration to study hard for their exams, they were given it in sensational style by Gandalf himself.

Sir Ian McKellen, who played the wizard in both film adaptations of the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, gave some sage advice to students by repeating one of his character’s most famous lines while visiting Chew Valley High School in Bristol.

The mini-performance was captured on video by the school and later uploaded to YouTube where it has gone viral and been viewed across the globe nearly a million times.

The video shows Sir Ian speaking through a window, where he tells pupils – eager to see the man who also plays Magneto in the hugely popular X-Men films – that they need to revise hard for their exams.

“In your preparation for your examinations, if you don’t do your revision properly, do you know what will happen?” he asks.

The mass of youngsters brace themselves for the answer before Sir Ian bellows Gandalf's iconic line from The Fellowship of the Ring: “YOU SHALL NOT PASS!”

If a wizard can't inspire a student to do well in their studies, then nothing will.
