A single New York school has been overwhelmed by 20,000 gifts and sympathetic letters from all over the world since the September 11 terror attacks, writes Jon Marcus.
The Manhattan School for Children, which is nowhere near the World Trade Center, has apparently been singled out because teachers and other adults have typed “Manhattan schools” into their Internet search engines and immediately come across its website.
The result is a ratio of 40 items of mail for every student at the small elementary school.
“I found your school on the Internet and I hope you will appreciate our little gesture of love,” wrote a Dutch teacher. In fact, there are 1,100 schools in New York City. The school is now making arrangements to share its mail with the rest.
