(Photograph) - Schoolgirl Katrin Boyle, above, has become the first woman to work on the New Quay lifeboat - and with the heatwave bringing flocks of visitors to the West Wales resort, it is likely to be a busy summer for the crew.
“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do since I was little,” said the 18-year-old, who is studying for an advanced level GNVQ in business studies at Aberaeron comprehensive.
Her uncle Greg, who is also in the crew, has been giving her advice and so far male chauvinism hasn’t raised its head.
“There have been no problems because I am a girl,” said Katrin. “If they think I can’t cope then no one is telling me. They treat me just like the others. ”
The crew practises once a fortnight and Katrin has undergone training and taken part in exercises with the in-shore boat.
