More than two in five secondary schools have made languages optional for pupils ahead of official changes to the curriculum in September 2004, according to a new survey. The poll of 146 schools by Cilt, the National Centre for Languages, and the Association of Language Learning, found that in one in five schools where languages had been made optional, more than half of pupils had dropped the subject.
