Invigorating investigations

What is it?

The Royal Society’s Invigorate microsite spans a range of science topics divided by key stage and theme. From key stage 2 topics on electricity, light and sound to complex key stage 5 activities exploring quantum and particle physics, the resources cover a great deal.

How to use it

Easy to navigate and pupil-friendly, with catchy headings and sketches leading to each topic, the microsite includes information for practical experiments, with links to worksheets for class use alongside investigative and assessment questions to hone the scientific skills of lower key stage pupils.

Teachers’ notes can be hidden so that pupils can use the pages for independent study, and the content is arranged as short bursts of information followed by an experiment for pupils to discover things for themselves.

The KS4 and KS5 content is more thorough and includes factsheets, videos, podcasts, reports and scientific diagrams followed by related experiments or investigative tasks. There are teachers’ classroom instructions and links for further research.

What else?

Tasks for pupils include: creating sea ice (KS2); a debate on whether robots should be allowed to take over human jobs (KS3); creating chemical photographs (KS4); and redesigning the education system based on neuroscience research (KS5).
