Suffering from a broken heart
The end of a romance or the death of a loved one can trigger a heart attack or other cardiac problems, according to a new report. And women are up to nine times more likely to experience “broken heart syndrome”. A classic case would involve the death of a husband triggering a rush of adrenaline and other stress hormones that cause the heart’s pumping chamber to suddenly balloon and malfunction.
Dr Abhishek Deshmukh, a heart specialist at the University of Arkansas in the US, found records of 6,229 cases among 1,000 hospitals in 2007. Only 671 of these cases involved men.
