Brains at the Wellcome Collection

The Wellcome Collection on London’s Euston Road has gained a reputation for exceptional one-off free exhibitions, and the latest promises to be no exception. Brains: the mind as matter (29 March to 17 June 2012) explores what humans have done to brains in the cause of medical intervention, scientific enquiry, cultural meaning and technological change. It features more than 150 objects, including real brains, artworks, manuscripts, artefacts, videos and photographs.

The brain contains 100 billion nerve cells and some 100 trillion synapses or neural connections and cannot be transplanted. The exhibition explores the spectacular form, structure and condensed volume of the brain, and looks at the ethical difficulties it can raise. This is a good exhibition for key stage 4 pupils and above.
