THE Department for Education and Skills has launched a consultation into the proposed creation of a National Centre for Excellence in Science Teaching.

In March 2000 the Council for Science and Technology, the Government advisory body, published a report highlighting the need for effective continuing professional support for science teachers. It recommended the setting up of a national centre.

This consultation follows an exploratory study last summer to sample the views of science teachers, in-service training providers and professional institutions.

Teachers can respond to the consultation online at www.dfes.gov.ukconsultations
