A group set up to advise the Scottish Government on the profile and needs of the Scots language has found the strongest provision at primary and higher education levels, with secondary and further education trailing behind.
Its report, Audit of Current Scots Language Provision in Scotland, calls on the Government to expand provision in primary and, in particular, secondary, taking account of recent progress in some local authority areas, and to do more to build it into Curriculum for Excellence.
Local authorities and the Government should also explore the potential for delivering continuing professional development for teachers in the Scots language, it recommends.
Further research should be carried out exploring attitudes to the Scots language in teaching and existing barriers to its use in the classroom.
"Such research could also explore attitudes of parents to the Scots language and its status as a living, everyday language," says the report.
