DEVELOPING WRITING SKILLS STUDENT BOOK. By Tim Ayres and John Dayus. Heinemann pound;7.50. Teacher’s Support Pack with CD-Rom pound;25.99 + VAT.

In some ways, the writing papers at key stage 3 are the most difficult to prepare for, since the tasks are so artificial. This excellent book sets out to make sense of the wide variety of tasks with which the student may be confronted n a clear and accessible manner, using engaging stimulus material (such as a double-page spread from Terry Pratchett’s graphic novel The Colour of Magic) and breaking down the requirements stage by stage.

The teacher’s book and CD-Rom mean that worksheets are available for all the activities, and can be tailor-made to suit all students. Invaluable.
