Proshare Student Investor 2002 Aims to increase students' awareness and knowledge of shares and investing via a series of worksheets and competitions, including Young Business Writer of the Year. The Portfolio Challenge offers a top prize of pound;2,000 for the school or college whose students' share portfolio increases by the largest amount on a theoretical investment of pound;100,000 on the stock exchange. Students can also win a trip to one of the top financial cities in the world. Worksheets combine useful tasks with practical internet-based activities. Shell LiveWIRE A programme of resources and online mentoring for young entrepreneurs aged 16 to 30, Shell LiveWIRE covers schools, colleges and community enterprise schemes. The scheme is being used extensively in Scotland and Northern Ireland, where Shell LiveWIRE is running an enterprise awareness programme in schools backed by an enterprise module which has been incorporated into GCSE business studies, science and technology. John Devitt, the UK director of LiveWIRE, says: "The real challenge for us is separating enterprise from business and bringing it into other subjects."

Check out the learning zone on Cadbury's website for an excellent case study on Fuse, a new confectionery bar. There is a complete marketing plan for the new product, including competition analysis of the UK's top-selling brands and a breakdown of the snack market - almost pound;10 billion of biscuits, crisps and ice cream. The study looks at consumer testing, pack design, brand name and launch strategy. There are also role-play exercises on being a brand manager and teamwork to develop marketing campaigns.


Personal finance is now part of the curriculum in PSHE, citizenship and business studies, but it is a complex area that needs up-to-date materials and an imaginative approach to bring it to life. Supported by the Financial Services Authority, the QCA and the DFES as well as leading banks and insurance companies, Personal Finance Education Group is running its Excellence and Access project in 400 schools in 40 local education authorities. Materials are quality assured, as is its support and training for teachers. The website lists teaching resources by age and key stage as well as case studies and tried and tested lesson plans.
