Secret jail mothers

THE official number of children with mothers in jail could be understated, a prison reform charity has claimed.

More than 5,000 children have mothers in prison. But the Howard League for Penal Reform reckons that th figure could be higher, as women hide the fact that they are parents from the authorities, fearing that their children will be taken into care. The country has only 72 places in prison mother-and-baby units.
