YOU were correct to bring attention to the poor record of private education companies in in their attempt to improve standards (TES, April 4).

Perhaps they now recognise that it is just not possible to improve the quality of service in a sector monopolised by the state.

This should come as no surprise to those operating in an environment where competition is the force that drives all innovation and quality improvements.

It is also understandable that those working within the state monopoly will do everything in their power to hold on to their positions of privilege.

Perhaps state monopolies and the private sector do have one thing in common - they both appear to be fuelled by individual self-interest!
