Secular anger over GTC code

I think your article on the changes to the GTC draft code misses the point (“A code to rule lives”, July 17). If I understand it correctly, we are going back to more or less what is in place at the moment - the perfectly acceptable and appropriate wording about “respect” for principle 4 of the code, with regard to equality and diversity.

This I welcome and I am slightly baffled as to why concerns over protecting “free speech” and “religious liberty” should make secularists so angry.

As for their accusation that the GTC has somehow betrayed vulnerable pupils who might be victimised by “bigoted evangelical teachers”, who are these people?
