Visitors to Farr, between Inverness and Fort William, have to stop at Brin School, which boasts of its nursery. But this is more than a rural primary with a pre-five class attached, for Brin School Fields, to give the establishment its full name, is a tourist attraction in the best traditions of Scottish education.
The nursery is a real plant nursery, with 300 varieties of herbs and wild flowers and the former school at the centre of it contains a tearoom in the old schoolroom. It enjoys a Highland Health Board healthy eating award. Best of all, it runs courses in herb horticulture as well as taking school and college visits.
All of which proves that education can flourish, even after a school has been closed to classes. Glasgow take note.
But herbs in disused secondaries? The polis would be suspicious about that.
