In March this year Richard Handover, Chief Executive of WHSmith led a Seeing is Believing visit to Western-super-Mare. Senior business leaders from HTV West,First Group, Wessex Water, GKN Westland Industrial Products and Bacon and Woodrow Actuaries and Consultants also attended the visit.

The Bournville Estate in Weston-super-Mare is one of the most deprived zones in the UK and the businesses present on the visit witnessed a great need to support the schools in the area. As a result they have agreed to give their support to the schools through a variety of activities. These will include funding for breakfast clubs, support through staff volunteering either as governors or as headteacher mentors, and financial assistance for a big event to raise the profile of the area.

Celebration of Books Day is the big evet being organised by the companies and will link with the launch of the Reading is Fundamental scheme in the region.

The aim is that through bringing the pupils into contact with local sports and television personalities in an event to celebrate books, the pupils will be more encouraged to read themselves.

To support the event the businesses will also take part in a challenge at Bournville Infants School. This challenge will involve volunteers from the companies working with the pupils to build a better library facility at the school. The aim will not simply be to offer the pupils greater access to books, but also to give the children important contact with adults other than their teachers and parents.
