Send enemies up in smoke

Mick Farley, the mountain-climbing executive director of Cumbria LSC, has been on holiday in Ecuador.

It must have been nice to be so far away from Wordsworth country, where his plans to merge four FE colleges and close up to seven school sixth-forms are not making him universally popular.

While on his South American trip, Mr Farley witnessed the traditional burning of effigies - where the locals watch dummies of the people they despise going upin smoke.

"If they did that in Cumbria, they'd burn me," he said.
