Financial hardship and other pre-divorce factors play a key part in explaining why the children of separated parents are more likely to leave school with few or no qualifications, according to new research.

A study by the London School of Economics’ new Centre for the Analysis of Social Exclusion found divorce intensified the negative effects of family circumstances before the split, such as poverty.
