‘Serious’ flaws in most Scottish schools;In brief

SCOTTISH inspectors found 90 per cent of primaries and 85 per cent of secondaries have serious weaknesses. A fifth of heads are failing to provide good leadership. English and maths for 14-year-olds are poor in 40 per cent of schools, says Standards and Quality in Scottish Schools 1995-1998. It also reported that half of all primary school children needed an immediate improvement in their reading skills.
