On a not quite so romantic note, the diary hears of a hard-partying researcher at the British Educational Research Association conference in Edinburgh last week who was phoned by his wife on the morning after the night before.

Tongue firmly in cheek, he informed her that she should leave him alone because "I pulled last night". (Apparently, such hilarious jokes spice their marital life).

She put down the phone but moments later he received another call from his home. "I just told you, darling! Leave me alone," he shouted, "I'm having sex!"

There was a pause on the other end of the line: "...Dad, what did you say?"
