The Brighton institute of modern music is a very special place. The post-16 college aims to “bridge the gap between playing guitar in your bedroom and playing to a packed house”. Staff include Carleen Anderson, of the Brand New Heavies and Young Disciples, Jon Stewart, of Sleeper, and Kenwyn House, of Reef. Last Friday, Shaun Ryder, former lead singer of The Happy Mondays, turned up after a night DJing in Brighton’s Audio club to address the student body. Like all celebrity visitors, he was asked to sign his name on the library wall, a task which proved challenging. For ever more, visitors to the Brighton institute will know the great man as “Shan Ryder”.
