Inveraray Primary, with equal numbers of boys and girls in their side, won the Bute Highland Games Shinty Shield to underline their progress made in recent years.

The school took up playing eight years ago and the success is rubbing off on the local club. It set up a women’s section two years ago and, after losing all of their matches in the first year, they finished third last season in division two of the National League.

“We encourage girls from Primary 5 age upwards to join our training, which is coached by two women, myself and Linda Divers,” explains Inveraray Primary teacher and club secretary Lynn Kidd. “We have succeeded in encouraging some of the mothers to play too.

“We are supported and encouraged by our men’s club, although we are financially independent.”
