The two-week Walk the WalkTalk the Talk project, which focused on the area’s shipbuilding industry, was developed by Linda Molvik, a Renfrewshire primary teacher currently on secondment as a cultural co-ordinator for the local authority.

The project was sparked by a meeting with David Mann from the Clydebuilt Scottish Maritime Museum at Braehead in Renfrew-shire. “We were discussing ideas for projects that might attract a pound;2,000 grant from the Scottish Museums Council and David said he’d always wanted to offer walks along the Clyde with a storyteller. Our project was developed from that,”

explains Ms Molvik.

The project comprised a trip to the community museum in Renfrew; a 20-minute walk, accompanied by Gerry Durkin, a professional storyteller, along the River Clyde walkway to Braehead and a tour of Clyde-built museum.

“The project has a 1950s theme, which was the point when shipbuilding along the Clyde started to decline,” she says.

Walk the WalkTalk the Talk was aimed at P5-7, and Ms Molvik made a pre-trip visit to each school with a resources box of handling objects, worksheets and quizzes. She believes that when subjects are brought alive through active participation, children learn more quickly, take more in and retain more knowledge.

Six primary schools in Renfrewshire have already taken part in the project.

David Mann hopes to offer a similar service to more schools next term.
