An East Sussex private school has closed unexpectedly just weeks before pupils take their GCSE and A-level exams.

Newlands school in Seaford, which has been in financial difficulties, told parents that it had proved impossible to reach agreement with the school’s landlords over joining the Cognita group of schools, which was one way of ensuring the school remained open. Local schools Brighton college, Eastbourne college and St Bede’s have offered to take some pupils.
