Shortage of tough talk, right lads?

In his piece on recruitment, “Demands of a scanty supply” (TES, School Management Update, May 10) Terry Mahoney states that teaching is increasingly becoming a job for women. Well, there’s no doubt about that.

He further suggests (correctly in my view) that a “lack of male role models may be linked to underachievement among boys”.

My experience firmly showsthat there is no “maybe” about it - that tough working-class boys invariably work better and achieve more when taught by strong, streetwise, working-class male teachers.
