The shortlist for the children’s category of the Whitbread Book of the Year is: They Do Things Differently There by Jan Mark (Bodley Head); Gold Dust by Geraldine McCaughrean (OUP); and Griffin’s Castle by Jenny Nimmo (Methuen). The winner will be announced on November 14.

The Earthworm Book Award, sponsored by Friends of the Earth to encourage books which promote an awareness of the natural world, was presented last week to Sian Lewis for Project Kite (Andersen Press). The novel was reviewed in The TES on April 22 by Stephanie Nettell.
