Building a network

Xemplar will demonstrate Apple’s new iMac computer. With easy network and modem connections and high modem speed, the iMac has no floppy disk drive, but will plug into a school network. A disk drive, if required, can be bought separately. Educational price Pounds 799.

Network PCs have no floppy disk drive or hard disk, they are smaller, cheaper and can be linked to the Internet. When you demonstrate something, everyone can see it on their own screens. Xemplar’s Matrix NC workstations cost Pounds 419.

PC Toolbox will also be on the Xemplar stand, as “the base solution for primary schools”. A new desktop machine loaded with educational software, including TAG Development’s Portfolio Builder, which enables the teacher to manage and record pupils’ work. Pounds 999. Tel: 01223 724200.

Primary concepts

Looking for software for the Scottish curriculum? The Scottish Council for Educational Technology has a catalogue, including Let’s Go CD-Roms which help children grasp basic concepts such as left and right. Let’s Go with Katy Modules 1-3 (Pounds 29.99) was launched earlier this year; now modules 4-7 are available - Let’s Go to School, to Town, on Safari and Camping (Pounds 25), for use in maths, environmental or social studies. Teachers can see the winner of the BETT 97 gold award on the Softease stand. Talking Textease, for mainstream and special needs learners of all ages, combines word processing, multimedia and desktop publishing, and a free copy of the HTML ReaderWriter that converts documents into web pages. Integrating learning

RM (Research Machines) has a growing presence in Scotland, having just won a Pounds 5 million contract to supply and service South Lanarkshire secondary schools. Teachers can see SuccessMaker, RM’s integrated learning system for basic maths and English skills, tailoring exercises to their individual requirements.

Also on show is the ILS Primary Maths program for 5-11 year olds, Living Library, which provides educational software, encyclopedias, dictionaries and picture archives on RM’s Internet for Learning service (www.eduweb.co.uk), and School Share, which allows RM Window Box computers to share printing and Internet access. Museums in the picture

A really exciting development is SCRAN, the Scottish Cultural Resources Access Network, which aims to put thousands of museum artefacts on to the Internet. The Pounds 15 million millennium project will take schools on a virtual tour of a Charles Rennie Mackintosh house or let them put skin on the bones of hominid skulls at Glasgow University Hunterian Museum.
