A classical training came in handy for Tony Hardman, NASUWT President, when he drove a bus to Greece on a field trip. The bus broke down en route leaving Mr Hardman, head of Archbishop Beck High School in Lierpool, to explain the problem to a garage mechanic in a mix of ancient Greek and Latin. The mechanic, who spoke fluent English, kept stum before asking:

“Right then, where is this chariot?”
