Simple answer to lack of maths GCSE

Like James Kelly (Friday, February 1), when preparing to apply for a PGCE, I realised that I did not have a maths GCSE.

I had to do something, so I sat the exam again and got a grade B. Not only has this enabled me to begin my PGCE but has also awakened an interest in maths, which can only help me in my teaching career.

If, James, you're "desperate to teach" surely taking the GCSE is the only obstacle.

And before you say it, I always thought I was hopeless at maths, but with a good tutor and lots of hard work, I'm sure you could be successful.
