I fully concur with Peter Wilby’s sentiment that modern toys are killing creative play (TES, Comment, May 18).
Time was when a large cardboard box would be a table, trunk, fort, refuge, even a tortoise’s shell. As a child I well remember playing with boxes and packing cases for hours. I have frequently told my family that my favourite toy was an old bicycle wheel (missing spokes, no tyre) and a stick. I used to bowl the wheel along, quite merrily, trying to keep it going in a straight line.
