The BBC’s web site is already delivering learning improvements for schools, according to its schools online manager.

Lakshmi Hughes said the site had enabled pupils in an English school to improve mock GCSE exams performances using a “Bitesize” revision package.

John Russell, BBC Scotland’s, senior education officer, said these results would be used to promote the forthcoming Bitesize Standard grade revision course.

“This medium has great potential because we can create customised material where pupils can interact and get feedback online,” he said. “This will permit teachers to handle things in a different way in the classroom.”

The BBC is to produce two-hour Bitesize programmes in English, maths, French and geography. From February, there will be a site allowing pupils to “Ask a Teacher” using e-mail, talk to other pupils, get tips on revision and test themselves to find their weaknesses.
