KS1,2: This site, which promotes enquiry-based learning, provides advice for pupils and their teachers as they undertake investigations and offers the chance to interact with experienced researchers. There are opportunities to go beyond the facts and share ideas, ask questions, solve problems and come to appreciate that not every activity will lead to a “right” answer. Extensive use is made of photographs and illustrations and there is a good selection of video and audio. A forum is reserved for parents and teachers to discuss the activities. Navigation via the menu bar is simple and content includes many aspects of the science curriculum.

KS 1,2,3,4: Contemporary science and technology can be explored through this site by its ambitious links to 400 science and technology centres worldwide. Resources include a good range of thematic interactive experiences. The experiments section is for hands-on off-line activities.

There are live cams from science centres, many of which feature interesting experiments, and parent and teacher pages.

KS2: The home of Young Scientist magazine includes several sample articles.

These are illustrated and related to the English curriculum but often look at subjects in some depth, so are of particular interest to the more able pupil.

KS 3,4,5: This site is strong on multimedia activities and provides some good resources covering various aspects of science, including experimental and investigative science.

Downloadable materials include PowerPoint presentations and worksheets.

There are also online quizzes, graphs, charts, support cards, animations and a movie of the day. Navigation is easy and the site is well presented.

Science Teacher Stuff

KS 3,4: This is a friendly portal site, aimed at helping teachers who want to benefit from what other teachers have already done. Resources, such as lesson plans and activities are grouped under the headings of Life, Earth, Physical, Space, Environmental and General Science. These topics are then sub-divided.

The site is based in the US, so it includes themes outside our national curriculum but much is relevant. It also covers wider aspects of science, such as safety, teaching strategies and assessment. A section for children is also organised by theme.
