Skills scoreboard

The Government this week told 1,000 of Britain's biggest engineering employers it wanted detailed information on employee training published as a "skills scoreboard".

The scheme, announced by the science and technology minister Ian Taylor, reflects government concern that engineering shortfalls will damage Britain's competitiveness.

The move was immediately seized on by Labour as a government policy U-turn. Labour wants the statutory disclosure of all skills levels and training commitments in company accounts.
