The history of slavery (picture right) could be made a compulsory topic on the national curriculum, a Government minister said this week.
Alan Johnson, Education Secretary, asked for making the subject compulsory to be considered as part of a review of diversity in the curriculum headed by retired secondary headteacher Keith Ajegbo.
The move was revealed by culture minister David Lammy in a speech in central London to highlight preparations to mark the 200th anniversary of the 1807 Abolition of the Slave Trade Act.
