Slicing the cake;FE Focus

The pound;314.4 million allocation announced last week, representing a pound;38m increase, is made up of four elements - pound;253.3m in recurrent grant to meet basic running costs, pound;47m for bursaries, pound;9.4m largely for health and safety improvements, and pound;4.7m for information technology to hook colleges to the National Grid for Learning.

Another pound;3m is being held in reserve for the funding council to spend on projects which will promote innovation and collaboration. A further pound;3m has been earmarked in development funding for the University of the Highlands and Islands project.

Recurrent grant includes pound;8m for an additional 8,000 students, mainly from disadvantaged groups, an extra pound;3m in bursary support for students and a "rurality" sum to meet the higher costs of island and rural colleges.
