Smith and son

Back in Shetland, we reported last week on the retirement of Bill Smith as the council's education chairman after 22 years at the political helm of the authority.

The Shetland News Agency revealed that "Mr Smith .... holds a rare honour for a local politician - an honorary fellowship of the teachers' union, EIS, awarded in 1992 for his contribution to education in Shetland and nationwide. "

That name Smith reminds us of one Ronnie, a Shetlander who is general secretary of the EIS. There is no truth in the rumour that the exchange at the fellowship ceremony went: "Well done, dad." "Thank you, son."
