The Educational Institute of Scotland and the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers had their annual spat again this year over setting up a pay review body for teachers.

The now-traditional NAS call for an end to national bargaining, which is dominated by the EIS, attracted just three votes, not unsurprisingly at a trade union conference. May Ferries, past EIS president, described the motion as “just absurd”.

The main problem was the failure of the Government and councils to fund teachers’ salaries, Ms Ferries said.
