CHRIS Woodhead, the chief inspector says, that “most schools are capable of managing their own destinies” (TES, May 14).
He then states quite categorically: “I do not want inspection, any more than I want local education authorities or university education departments, to draw schools into a culture of dependency, and over-reliance on the supposed wisdom of the outside expert.”
These are refreshingly liberating sentiments, which I’m sure all teachers will be pleased to hear.
Could Mr Woodhead now tell us if we teachers should have the same attitude to the National Literacy Strategy, which is currently persuading all primary schools not to manage their own destinies but instead to rely on the supposed wisdom of the outside expert?
