Soaring fees hit middle class in the pocket

Surging private-school fees have helped to push the “real” rate of inflation for the middle classes up to more than four times the Government’s official rate, an economist said this week.

According to Professor Richard Scase, an economist at Kent university, inflation for middle classes households is now as high as 10 per cent because of rises in the cost of energy, council tax and school fees. The Government announced last week that the official rate of inflation fell to 2.4 per cent in July from 2.5 per cent the previous month.
