AT a recent summer school the children were being encouraged to use a dictionary rather than rely upon the spell-check of the computer. One child was struggling with the word “frightened” and was directed to use a dictionary newly bought by the school with its literacy money.
The pupil successfully fund “frightened” and read out the meaning and synonyms. “Frightened: to be scared; to be disturbed; to be shit-scared; or, alternatively, to be scared shitless”.
Sales of dictionaries are booming in Somerset now.
